iPhone Hype

I’ve done a good job of generally ignoring the impending iPhone launch. Sure, I was impressed with the Macworld demos but I was more irritated that there was nothing about the Mac at Macworld. Since January, the hype has been unreal. Apple and AT&T have certainly promoted it but I think the bulk of the hype has come from elsewhere. Anytime you see expectations so high, how can it possibly succeed?

Well, the first wave of reviews are in and so far, they are holding up well. Maybe this thing really is revolutionary.

I know a few people that are going to be in line Friday night and are ready to give Apple more of their money. I find myself now watching the videos and figuring out how much it would really cost me to leave my Blackberry Pearl and T-Mobile behind. I likely will come to my senses and say no. But two things might push me to be irrational.

The first one is if my Blackberry goes south again. Three times in as many months, my Blackberry has rendered itself toast and forced me to hunt down a real Windows machine in order to restore the entire phone. For whatever reason, VMWare and Parallels won’t do the job. Then comes the period of reconfiguration to get it back to what I wanted and struggling with the crappy sync software for the Mac. I’m getting annoyed just typing this. I already know that syncing will be easier than any phone I’ve ever used. iTunes is rock solid and I already sync address book and calendar with my current iPod.

The second factor will be to actually hold one in my hands and see it in action. I distinctly remember using an iPod the first time. In about a minute, you know you want one. If Apple has truly merged the elegance of an iPod with smartphones, how can I resist?
