What a game. I can’t say I’m totally disappointed with a result of USA 1-1 Italy. This was a such a better performance. It was the US team I expected going into the tournament. They certainly deserved at least a result and probably the full three points. I though the red card on Mastroeni was ridiculous. And the second yellow on Pope was no better. The official really hurt the game today.
Thursday is going to be incredible. I think the US has a decent shot of getting through. The Czech Republic is hurting both after the loss today and the loss of Koller. Italy is the wild card. Can they play like the first game or will the team that played the US show up?
My biggest question after the game: why didn’t Arena sub Eddie Johnson in around the 70th minute? With the fatigue that was so clear in Italy, how could you not use all three subs? Coming into the tourney, I was a big fan of Arena. But after picking a bad lineup for the Czech Repulic game, the horrible offsides trap decision on the set piece for the Italy goal, and not using a sub late in the game, I wonder if he’s losing his touch.
