It’s been said that you want people to either love your product or hate it. If that’s the goal, Apple is certainly meeting that criteria. Check out this hate site by San Disk. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such a spiteful competitive ad campaign. Nothing about how good their own product is. All they seem to say is that it’s not an iPod and trash anyone who might have bought an iPod. Does this kind of marketing work?

Posted 18 Jun 2006 at 17:26 ¶I really can’t think of anyone else who would act this way, or think it was acceptable to act this way.
I find it completely gross, and to find out that it is all actually for a product. That is just icing on the cake.
I think it’s quite funny. But not as funny as watching people wearing ‘ibuds’ looking at the ads and realising (slowly) that they are having the mickey taken out of them.
And why is it that certain people feel they have to leap to Apple’s defense? Who cares if one big company that wants nothing but your cash insults another big company. If you have a problem with it, then the millions of pounds spent by ad agencies trying to secure your ‘brand loyalty’ has worked, and you are an idiot.

I didn’t buy an iPod to be hip though. I bought one 3 years ago because it was the best portable music player in my opinion. My point was that the negative tone of the ads seemed to me to be counterproductive. I personally was turned off by the ad campaign.
