Google continues to raise eyebrows with the latest iteration of desktop search as explained in this CNet article.
I was a pretty big fan of Google initially but every day I find myself trying to use them less and less. I think it was a forgone conclusion that their cute “Do No Evil” slogan would eventually give way to business as usual. But I never would have predicted it would change so rapidly.
Google is amassing an amazing amount of information on all of us. I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that it really is to make their products better. But as the US government’s request for user search history shows, they are sitting on an enormous privacy time bomb.
I still believe in web services and online applications. But with cases like this, I think it demonstrates the continued need for isolated computers and applications that allow you to control your own data absolutely.
