OSCON - Day 4

Day 4 and I’m now ready to be done. Probably the late night party at Kell’s we held last night had something to do with it. It was a pretty good time. We hoped to find potential recruits for the company. We did get a few but not as many as we would have liked. It did turn out to be a good chance to talk to our peers. I talked with some really sharp guys from Mitre in Massachusetts. They are doing some hard core stuff for the DOD. I was surprised to see that there were many things our companies had in common. One of their guys is interested in working on log-based replication for PostgreSQL. I hope to help them out on it.

Today was mostly about booth duty but I did go to the keynote. It was worse than yesterday. Except for Dick Hardt of sxip. What a cool presentation. He used this fast-paced style that was very effective. And the problem they are trying to solve is critical. He calls it Identity 2.0. Basically, it is an open method for presenting credentials from a trusted verifiable source that will be honored anywhere on the web. It is more than just single sign-on but that is a big part. It is probably somewhat in the spirit of Passport but hopefully without the flaws.

We finished up the booth today. I think we did a good job of letting people know what the company is about and what we are trying to do. It is fun to explain what you are doing and see people get it or change their perceptions.

I’m blowing off the Friday sessions and checking out Portland with the family and some friends. It was a long week but I learned a lot about the culture if not about the technology.
